Summative assessment is just what it sounds like, the sum of everything! This is used to grade a student, to determine the degree of student success/mastery with designated goals at key points in the learning cycle. Summative assessment should only come after considerable practice with the outcomes you are grading. This isn't to say that summative assessments have to be "one-sized fits all", you can vary the way that each student shows you how they mastered their goals. Below is a chart that shows all the different ways that students can show their mastery through their intelligences. You could create a range of ideas and students have to pick from them. It is your job as a teacher to ensure that every child has a fair chance to show what they know in a way they are comfortable and in a way they can experience success.
